The pirate Alexander Selkirk has been called “the real” Robinson Crusoe. In it, the protagonist is a castaway who spends decades on a desert island. Robinson Crusoe, Daniel Defoe’s 1719 book, is considered by many to be the first English-language novel. In fiction, the stranded setting, wherever it may occur, often an island, is an old one. I suspect those people would say the charm of the thought, having to struggle with just our wits and what we find nearby to survive, depreciates the closer it comes to experience. Most of us won’t live them, though some unfortunate people do. These are extraordinary instances of being stranded. Lost in the wilderness and perhaps even driven to cannibalism. If there’s something appealing about the notion of being stranded, it no doubt tends to come at a distance – when one is separated from the reality of being left high and dry, safely protected from the reality of the experience by words on a page or images on a screen.

5/24/2023 0 Comments The four winds reviewI’ve read several non-fiction books about the Dust Bowl and feel I know the facts of that part of The Great Depression well.Īnd maybe that was my problem with The Four Winds. I was happy to pull out my DVDs and let him watch from beginning to the end. I have watched Ken Burns’ The Dust Bowl ( Amazon) too many times to count, especially when my son was in fifth grade and he watched excerpts in class and was really interested in the topic. I’d read The Grapes of Wrath ( Amazon) in high school and watched the movie starring Henry Fonda ( Amazon) both of which I found excellent. But there was something compelling about reading about the Great Depression and all the deprivation a year into Covid lockdown. I rarely read best sellers because they are best sellers and wait for the fervor to die down to read a much-hyped book. The Four Winds ( Amazon) is an indelible portrait of America and the American Dream, as seen through the eyes of one indomitable woman whose courage and sacrifice will come to define a generation.” In this uncertain and dangerous time, Elsa Martinelli-like so many of her neighbors-must make an agonizing choice: fight for the land she loves or go west, to California, in search of a better life. 5/24/2023 0 Comments The amatuer cracksmanThis is the second collection of short stories recounting some of their adventure. Instead he presents it to Queen Victoria in tribute to her Diamond Jubilee. Managing to steal it from out of heavy security, it finds it so beautiful that he can't melt it down to sell. In "A Jubilee Present", Raffles becomes enamored with a priceless gold cup in the British Museum. Recording their many adventures while also being the partner in crime. Harry "Bunny" Manders, an old schoolmate, plays Watson to Raffles. Being of good manners, he never steals from his hosts, but if there is something amiss he will make it all right. Invited for his classy manners and top cricket playing at many a manor and country estate, he is a bit of a Robin Hood-esque figure crossed with Sherlock Holmes. Raffles, a gentleman thief, travels among the elite of the London social register. 5/24/2023 0 Comments Anarchy james tateThat said, the central image is relatively unambiguous and clearly depicts a cadaver wearing a crown, bent forwards over the back of a horse and falling towards the viewer. The overall impression is of an apparition, a phantasm, whose oneiric quality propels it out of everyday experience into another realm. The skeleton’s strangely undefined mount, a mere cipher of a horse, adds to the picture’s otherworldly and nightmarish effect. The archetypal figure of Death looms out of a dark background, its open arms spread wide as though to embrace the spectator. Without further contextual or narrative underpinnings that might explain it, the painting has the iconic concentration and visual punch of a memento mori. The painting’s unfinished state and its macabre subject have conspired to make it one of Turner’s most enigmatic and unsettling pictures. Yet this painting puts at centre stage not a living being, but a skeletal body. The prominence and scale of the central forms of the composition extends a tendency seen in other works of this period when Turner experimented with paintings where the figures are dominating presences. The style and execution of the painting suggest a date for its production from the later 1820s to the early 1830s. The Turner Bequest includes a number of paintings whose subjects remain obscure, one of them being an unfinished canvas that was formerly catalogued as A Skeleton Falling Off a Horse in Mid-Air, and is now tentatively titled Death on a Pale Horse(?) c.1825–30 (fig.1).
